Eyes Drawing Project

The last assignments in the drawing class I’m enrolled in was much more open than the previous ones. We were allowed to start with an image/subject of our choice, required to use at least 3 mediums and use an alternative drawing surface. Of course, I selected wood to draw on. I turned a platter out of cherry and sanded it only to 220 grit so the mediums would have a surface to hold onto. For the mediums I chose to use charcoal, conte, graphite, india ink and a small amount of acrylic paint.
The subject of the drawing was going to be a set of eyes. I selected an image of a woman wearing a hijab which allowed me to focus on the eyes without having to deal with other facial features. The charcoal and conte held onto the wood surface much better than I expected. To replicate the fabric the wood surface was stippled with a wood burner then covered with india ink and a small amount of gray acrylic paint to highlight some light reflection.
Overall, I’m very pleased with the way it turned out.

Roses & Thorns

Over the Christmas holidays I was in Ohio and stopped by the WoodWerks store (which is one of my favorite tool stores). While browsing around I found a template for laying out diamond and triangle turnings. The templates are made by Mike Sorge, he calls the turnings he makes with them Elegant Geometrics. I was interested in the design so I thought I’d give a diamond shaped turning a try.

This is made from a cherry board. It measures 20 inches long.

The Woodworking Shows are in town this weekend so I will be displaying this in their Project Showcase area.

The platters are complete

The wax coating went on this morning. Took pictures of both platters and posted them to the Turning Gallery page.

This picture was an attempt to show light through the holes in the larger platter.

Platter Update Two

I completed the shavings cleanout task today. Then after a quick re-sand to remove any tools marks I may have added. The first coat of Danish Oil went on. It is really looking nice.

I will be wet sanding additional oil layers once a day for the next 5 or 6 days. Doing this gives the wood a nicer sheen. Then the piece will dry for about 3 more days before the wax coating goes on. So in 1 to 2 weeks I will have a completed platter.

Below are some before and after photos from today’s work.

Platter Update

The plan today was simple, finish cleaning up the platter and apply the first coat cheap nba jerseys of Danish Oil. Of course not Platter everything goes as planned.

IMG_0187_MAs I pointed out in a previous post, the large platter has a wholesale mlb jerseys lot of worm holes/tunnels throughout it. 台所でショーツの中に手をいれて指ズボしてる主婦の後ろ姿がエロいオナニー動画 Some of these holes are clear but many still have left over wood shavings clogging them cheap nba jerseys from whatever bug burrowed its way around the tree. 05 (I’m not sure if this would be called “punky wood”. I always considered punky to be wood that is soft because Tutzing it’s decaying, not because it was ground up by an insect. So I will call them shavings for now.)

IMG_0192_MAnyway, I don’t want the shavings to become loose and come out of the platter over time. So I need to do something about this. I have two options: add a wood stabilizer such as CA glue to each shavings area or remove the shavings. The CA option is nice because squirting each area with glue and hitting it with accelerator is very quick. The down side is that each area with glue will not absorb the Danish Oil, and the glue tends to leave a shiny spot. Another concerned is that the glue will leach into the surrounding wood and leave a larger spot than expect in each area. The second option is less error prone but much more time consuming, clean out all the shavings leaving only good hardwood.

In the long run removing all the shaving is the best way to go. It will look better having more clean holes throughout the piece and we will not have inconsistencies with the oil finish.

IMG_0189_MCompressed air is good at removing all the shavings that are loose. But most of them are packed in the tunnels so I’m going to have to dig them out. A quick stop at the Rite-Aid dental care section and I picked up some metal picks and a cool little brush thingy to help scrub out the tunnels. The picks are good at digging into the tunnels and breaking up the shavings and then a blast of air removes the rest. I guess I didn’t really give this platter a close enough inspection before I started because the more I work on it the more shavings I’m finding. Did I say the CA option would have been fast? Well too late for that now. I put about six hours into this today and I’m only about two thirds of the way done.

DCIM100GOPROI found this little guy’s dead body still in one of the tunnels. I think I’ll call him Carl. turned Thanks for your help Carl but your services are no longer needed.

Digging out more holes.

I wear the air filter so I don’t breathe in any of the shavings when using compressed air. The ear protectors are because the compressor is just across the room.

So far it’s looking good. When this platter is complete I will have to put a light under it and see what shines through all these holes.

The platters have been turned

Both maple disks have been turned. Les This wood small sure does wholesale nba jerseys have cheap jerseys some nice character to it. The Dawn larger platter has worm holes that go all the way Time through it.
Now wholesale NFL jerseys to decide what kind of a finish to put on them. My first thoughts are a Natural Danish Oil 8/20/12 and cheap nba jerseys a coating of cheap nfl jerseys wax.

Platter Time

At the December DAW meeting Bob gave Gift me these two maple disks. He asked if I would turn a platter out of one for a friend that has supplied him with some Maple cheap jerseys for his projects. Bob’s wholesale jerseys lathe doesn’t have the capacity to turn a 13” disk. This looks like some really cheap nba jerseys nice wood with some burl sections and one has lots of cheap jerseys worm holes.

Maple Disks

I think I’ll start with the smaller one that I’m going to keep. This will give cheap jerseys me a feel for how the wood is going to becoming cut. BOOST It is very, very dry.
