Copper Bowl

Copper Closeup

I finished this bowl with a paint that has copper embedded in it. The mahogany brown patina I applied after painting didn’t have as big an effect I thought it would. Probably because of the other ingredients added to the paint.

It measures approximately 2 inches high by 5 1/2 inches wide.

CopperCopper Top

This paint is a three part mixture of paint, hardener and catalyst that goes on thick. Next time I’ll try spraying it on. Hopefully that will cut down on the amount of sanding required to get the brush strokes out.

Turning Contest Entry

Every year the Detroit Area Woodturners hold their Annual Turning Contest during the December holiday meeting. It usually starts in October where they provide a block of wood to be used. This year they supplied a piece of maple the was 3 inches x 3 inches x 8 inches. ( wish I would have taken a picture of it before I started ) They charge $5 for the wood and will provide everyone that brings in a turning made out of it a $10 gift certificate.

The rules are simple:

  • Must use club purchased block
  • Veneer can be used up to ¼” thick
  • No additional wood can be used
  • Paint, dyes, carving, and burning can be applied

I took my block and cut it in half lengthwise the glued it back together to form a 1.5″ x 6″ x 8″ block. From this I turned a suspended bowl. After some pyrography, piercing, and airbrushing this is what I came up with.
